About Holly

The Experienced Science Writer You Can Trust

For Holly Martin, becoming a science and technology writer was a natural joining of her passion for learning new things and her desire to spread the word about the incredible scientific breakthroughs and world-changing technologies she encountered. An avid follower of scientific and technological development, Holly is also well-versed in the worlds of editing and publishing. Her left- and right-brained approach to science writing makes her a unique asset who is able to fluently communicate with engineers and scientists as well as marketers and corporate officers.

Holly was raised in what she calls “Science City, USA,” Oak Ridge, TN, where the radioactive fuel for the first atomic bomb was produced. During her childhood, Oak Ridge was known for its exceptionally high number of PhDs per capita. “My grandfather, father, uncle, cousin and brothers were all engineers,” Holly says. “I spent hours listening to my dad explain his work and visiting his lab, so I learned ‘from my father’s knee’ to speak and understand ‘engineereese.’”

Holly graduated with a degree in engineering science with an environmental engineering emphasis from the University of Tennessee. She worked as an engineer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, CA, before becoming an editor at the technical trade journals Lasers & Applications and Fiberoptic Product News.
